About Classic Novels

Question: What is your favorite classic novel and why?

To Kill a Mockingbird ate jhing! Miki Tabinas

Call of the Wild by Jack London. It’s about a domesticated dog that turned to a wild dog. It taught me many lessons. Be brave tho. I recommend it to young readers like me. Lol, It’s worth reading.” Alliezah Garcia

Lord of the Flies. I think this is the first classic novel I had read. Out of curiosity and boredom dahil vacation nun and that’s the first book I saw at home. Chill lang yung story compared to other classic novels na kailangan ko pa ng katabing dictionary. Sa tingin ko isa ito sa pwedeng irecommend for beginners that would like to read a classic novel.” –Rio Zaira Tenecio

The Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë… Strangely compelling and undoubtedly well written. It depicts the terrors and horror of selfish human emotions and the complexities it can bring. It presents a web of conflict between characters that are utterly hateful and thoroughly contemptible. Hate and vengeance overflows the entire story, barely balance-out by the love between Catherine and Heathcliff, which makes it hard for someone to stop once you start reading it, one would keep on waiting and wanting for that resolution prolonged by vivid imagery of the gloomy moors and point of views of multiple well develop side characters. Emily effortlessly portrayed the worst form of humanity when swallowed by anger and hate but also consumed by a love so strong. With a conflict too great, I just love the manner as to which she ended the whole tirade. Subtle, realistic, abrupt but satisfying. This story has taught me that if one must hate and refused to forgive, carry that hate with you unto your grave, don’t pass it along.”Rhye Quirante

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, ate. It is hauntingly poetic. Yung maiinis ka sa characters kasi may mga chances silang sinayang pero at the same time, maaawa rin kasi biktima lang din sila ng mga wrong choices at sitwasyon mismo. Heathcliff’s love for Catherine is so overwhelming, na minsan iniisip ko na parang di deserving si Catherine nung pagmamahal na yun. But who am I to judge, right? This novel is just too much. Laging may goosebumps. It’s about girl empowerment in some aspects dahil napakatalino ni Jane at nagbibigay ng unconditional love sa mahal niya.” –Vanessa Necesario

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens bec It was written with a sense of mastery, contains a superbly constructed plot, has a host of memorable characters, and is full of good scenes. It is more complicated than most of Dickens’ novels, but not difficult to read.”TG Hugo
Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. From A Study in Scarlet to The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes. This is really a mind blowing and I am amazed by the twist and tricks of the stories. This really deserve a compliment. Plus the fact that I’m fond of detective stories, Sir Doyle nailed it.”Donna Mae M. Mana
The HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE-DAME by Victor Hugo. I was not a fan of the Disney’s version but upon reading the original novel way back in highschool, doon ko lang siya na-appreciate. And boy was it dark and far from a kid’s tale! I fell in love with the story na halu-halong drama, history, religion, epic, romance and politics with a very vivid description ng Paris at ng mismong cathedral ng Notre-Dame minus the talking gargoyles. Ito ang kauna-unahang english novel na nanggigil ako sa inis, natawa, nagpigil ng hininga at na-depress (one of the best ending ever written kahit tragic). Naging instant fan ako ng Disney version after ko siyang mabasa. Until now, wala pa ring nakakapalit sa pagiging number 1 ng novel na ‘to para sa akin.”Einstein Lakandula Crux
The Little Prince by Antoine De Saint-Exupery. Pinakita dito yung deeper secrets of reality that you need to analyze para maintindihan mo yung gustong iparating na mensahe ng story. Ang favorite line ko dun
“One sees clearly only with the heart. Anything essential is invisible to the eyes.””Charisse Bartolome
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Nakikita ko kasi ang katayuan ng kababaihan sa lipunan noon, na hindi ka lang dapat basta ikasal. Choice mo yun. Pero parang ang hot ng dating ni Mr. Darcy!”AllYellow Lock
My Fair Lady by George Bernard Shaw coz witty and made all sense”April Toledo
Gone With the Wind.. Bitch yung bidang babae. Haha”Cim Bonifacio
Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger – Nagandahan ako sa story na to. It talks about many themes kasi though hindi ko na matandaan. 🙂 Hehe saree na.”Kit Roque
“Maganda siya.. (Catcher in the Rye) teen angst and the story also deals with thematic material related to mental health, family issues, adolescent relationships, and school dynamics.” -TG Hugo
